Public Transport

General Info

Public transport services are provided by BVG with underground trains, trams and buses, - and by the S-Bahn Berlin, ie urban trains.

On the "S-Bahn Ring" (circle line) there are two lines: The S41 goes clockwise - and the S42 goes counter-clockwise.

There are two intersection of the circle line with other urban trains; the West one of "West Cross" (Westkreuz), and the one in the East is "East Cross" (Ostkreuz). All non-circle line trains going through Westkreuz go to Ostkreuz (and vice versa) and do not divert to the North or South. So it is pretty easy travelling between them as you can take any train. You just need to know whether you need to go West or East. ;)

There are three tariff zones - A, B, and C.

  • Zone A is the part within the circle line, including the circle line.
  • Zone B is Berlin within city limits except for Zone A.
  • Zone C is around Berlin (ca 15km), including Oranienburg and Potsdam.

Destination/Exhibition

S-Bhf Messe Süd: S9+S75

The nearest station to the exhibition is S-Bhf Messe Süd which is serviced by the urban trains S9 and S75.

Directions from East/West

When coming from the East, e.g. from "Alexanderplatz" or "Berlin Hauptbahnhof", take one of these lines going West in direction of "Spandau".

When coming from the West (eg Spandau) then you must go East towards "Flughafen Schönefeld" with S9 or "Wartenberg" with the S75.

When the "S-Bahn Ring" (circle line) is easy to reach for you, you can take the urban trains S41 and S42. Go unto station "Westkreuz" and change there to S9 or S75 in direction to "Spandau".

Charge

When coming from within tariff zones A or B then simply buy a ticket for zones A+B.

When you come from zone C (eg from Potsdam), then the best choice is a ticket for "ABC".

  • When your hotel is very near to the fairgrounds then a short trip ticket ("Kurzstrecke") might suffice. This ticket costs 1.30€ and allows you to go for six hops. A hop by bus or tram is a single hop, however, a hop by underground or urban trains account for two hops each.
  • A single ticket ("Einzelfahrausweis") costs 2.10€ and is valid for two hours - but only for one direction! You must not go back to the beginning. A day ticket, however, allows going on all directions for a whole day. So maybe want to consider this.
  • A day ticket is available for 6.10€ and is valid for the whole day and until 3 a.m. of the next day. The day ticket is worth it when you want to travel to the LinuxTag and may want to explore the city or attend the LinuxNight also.
  • Three day ticket: ...
  • Week pass: When you are here for four days then a three day ticket will not suffice - and an extra day ticket exceeds the cost for a week pass. So you might as well buy a week pass - and give it to someone just before you leave at the airport or station.
